TheEffectingEye  > Visual Essay 2 > Visual Essay 2 (Spring '08)
"Identity, Mediated"

Paired up randomly, students take two pictures to represent their partners after interviewing each other.

The black & white portrait imitates the style of one of the following photographers whose work we have discussed in class: Julia Margaret Cameron, David Octavius Hill, Oscar Gustav Rejlander, Matthew Brady, Alexander Gardner, Etienne Carjat, or Gaspard Félix Tournachon Nadar. Students choose their own style and approach they deem appropriate to portray their partners in the color picture.

Students are encouraged to use the essay to help the viewer understand who their partners are, or the essay can even contradict the way their partners are portrayed in their photographs. Alternatively, the photographs and words can give their partners a constructed identity that might be different from their own perception.

*Students: when commenting on the b&w pictures, think about whether or not the evocation of a specific photographer's work is successful. Consider how much effort the photographer/model put into staging the shot (dress/costume, props, lighting, etc.) and what you think should have been done to make the picture better. Consider the composition, contrast, saturation, and image/text relationship when commenting on each photograph.

My two pictures were taken of my friend Joseph Palacio. The Black and white photo is intended to follow the style of that of the late Julia Margret Pattle, a portrait artist who lived from 1815 – 1879. The picture that remained in color is simply intended to illustrate the vastness of Joseph’s character as a whole, and the contrasting elements that I was able to export from Joseph’s likeness when comparing the two photos. Furthermore, these two photos seem to describe Joseph’s personality in a visual manner and give truer meaning to the interview I administered him orally. During this interview, I asked him questions regarding his personal history and his interests. Joseph Thomas Palacio was born in Marysville, Ca on July 6 1988. Since he was a young man, Joseph has always been one of both casual and formal mannerisms. His casual interests include swimming music, and Disney. However, the formal branch of his character leads him to take interest in formal clothing and fashion, especially regarding the business world. As Joseph wishes to be a business man in the future his interest in formal business clothing comes to no surprise. It was in the black and white photo that I wish to bring these formal aspects about Joseph to life visually. Meanwhile, I wanted to show the contrasting sides of character behind Joseph’s manner by shooting the color photo. Both of which, depicted his personality greatly.

In this picture, I captured her reading a book for a class here at UCM. She is intensively trying to finish this novel, captive to the text so she could relax this up coming weekend. She is planning to head home for the weekend and visit with her family. However, on the contrary she has but off all of her class readings until the night before class. Her final exam is in approximately eight hours. She is furiously sifting throw the gritty two- thousand page nightmare off a book.
Kathryn flees away from her dorm where TVs and Computers influence her thoughts of YouTube and what’s showing on the newest TV sitcom. She figures that if she is able to pass the test she is going to have to keep reading for the next ten hours straight, enabling her to finish the book and have only twenty minutes to relax. As she rushes to class endless pages of text whirl within in her mind, she tries to categorize the sequence of events that happened with in the restraint of the novel. As the teacher passes out the exam, questions fill her mind of her somewhat bleak future.
As she return to class two weeks later, the professor starts handing out grades. Butterflies fill her stomach. Finally, the teacher calls her name. Kathryn little by little turns the paper over, and to her amazement, she passed the test with a ninety-three percent. She felt relived and continued on with the rest of her semester dilemma free.

Stephanie Villimar is quite the fun loving person. One of her hobbies is styling hair. She enjoys creating new do’s because it is an outlet in which she can unleash her wild side. When she is styling one of her friends hair, she feels like an artist in front of a canvas and anything is possible. It’s fitting, then, that another hobby of hers is being a make up artist. Stephanie loves doing make up because she enjoys seeing the transformation that her friends go through and takes pleasure in seeing her work bring joy to others. Her love of hip-hop music is also something that makes Stephanie a fun loving person. She loves letting loose on the dance floor with friends and when that hip hop sounds over the speakers she feels the music in her bones. It’s too bad that all three hobbies couldn’t be combined into one . . . or can they?
