TheEffectingEye  > Photography > Visual Essay 3: Seduction Merced (Spring '09)
Merced and the San Joaquin Valley region have not received much positive press and the recent headline-making high rates of home foreclosure and unemployment have worsened the public perception (justified or misguided) of this area.

For this assignment, students act as important members of a mock non-profit organization in charge of promoting Merced to the national audience. They are given the task of designing a poster, with one to two images and a paragraph of 200 words, to show the "seductive" side(s) of Merced. They have the freedom to choose any subject matter (with or without people) and use any visual style that they deem appropriate to produce an effective poster.

There is no specified target audience, either. That is: the poster can appeal to the general public, families, business owners, developers, professionals, or young people like them.

They have the following options:
1) Simply submit 1-2 images and a text passage, or
2) Design an actual poster, with the image(s) and text incorporated, and submit a PDF of the poster (this option will be considered for a higher grade).

Ever since I moved to Merced 4 years ago, my life has changed. I was the “city-girl”, always on the go. I never realized that I could enjoy life at a slower pace. My way of thinking was, if I didn’t get to do as many things as possible in one day, then I was missing out. I remember sitting in traffic for hours. Even worse, I remember planning out my day and incorporating how much time it would take me to get from one place to another. I never realized how stressful life had become. I never took a moment to sit back and think my life could be different than my current lifestyle. All of that’s changed now. I enjoy being relaxed. I enjoy living a simple life. I enjoy living in MERCED!

As we step into Merced and take a closer look at this town, there are many hidden treasures to be found. Home to the newest University of California campus, this new university has given people of California a closer attention to the central valley. With all the focus on University of California, Merced, people often fail to notice the other beauties of Merced. As we take a stroll to Northern parts of Merced, we find ourselves to an open field of nature. With such a grand view of openness, one might feel relief and relax away from bustling cities. This openness is a vital part of Merced, as it really creates a contrast from big cities like Los Angles to small towns like Merced. As daylight falls, we often get to have a magnificent view of sunset, with accompanies of various trees and plants. This natural environment is what many needs in order to calm their mind of state. As night falls, we are thrown into a sea of stars. With such minimal human lightings, we are treated with views of shimming stars and sometimes a visiting shooting star. If you like a calm and environmental friendly setting, Merced is the perfect place for you.

The subject I chose to exhibit the seductive side of Merced is a photo combining the grandiosity of University and the lush landscape of the land. I feel as though nothing has more seducing power than UC Merced and the privacy, secluded, outdoors-y feel of Merced. Merced has long been described and advertised as the gateway to Yosemite and the scenery gives you the feel of the old west. Merced is a huge difference from city life and it just what people need as a getaway, especially for peaceful and quiet serene. The University of California Merced truly shows the seductive side of Merced because if landscape cannot get you here, higher education and job opportunities sure can; this is how many of our students and staff members were reeled in. With the increasing influx of people to the town as well as the continued expansion of the campus and community, opportunities and morale have reached an all time high since the first day of classes back in September 2005. Merced’s seducing power may extend beyond these given attributes, but for me this how Merced could seduce someone to travel down the highway 99 and make a G street exit.

Living in a crowded, noisy, annoying city? Sick of your obnoxious neighbors? If you answered yes to any of those questions, I have a solution for you! You can move to the peaceful, relaxing city of Merced, California! Homes here are quite spacious and affordable. To rent an apartment in cities such as San Francisco, and the Bay Area in general, cost thousands of dollars for just a two bedroom apartment, but in Merced, they cost up to $800 for a three bedroom apartment! Homes are much more affordable and spacious. Plus, there are less noise complaints because you aren’t sharing a wall between two homes.
How’s it sounding so far? Good? Awesome! In the city, you can’t see stars or nice sunrises or sunsets because of all the air pollution and light pollution. But in Merced, since everything is spread out and there’s less light pollution, you can stargaze with your children at night, or enjoy a romantic evening with your significant other. Is there any other place that you have been that has seen a sunrise like that? I sure haven’t. So, if you want to relax and enjoy quiet surroundings and the beauty of nature, then come on to Merced!!

Castle Air Museum 5050 Santa Fe Drive Atwater, CA 95301 www.castleairmuseum.org
With a tremendous collection of airplanes including more than 40 vintage military issue aircrafts from World War II, Korean and Vietnam War, an indoor museum, a gift shop, and restaurant, the museum is a must see in this town. The whole family can enjoy the history of these majestic warbirds like the Boeing B-52, the B-25 Mitchell, and the B-29 which was the bomber that ended the WWII in the Pacific. The museum includes wartime memorabilia, Army Air Corps and Air Force Uniforms, and other historical artifacts. These historic aircrafts and their stories will provide a unique learning experience for the whole family.

The Bloss home is a historic part of the city of Atwater. It is also part of the Bloss Scholarship, where many students and graduates of the Merced Union High School District pursuing a college education, have been helped financially with their education. The Bloss home was built in 1914 for George Stone Bloss Jr. and his wife who had come from Connecticut. He became the first mayor of Atwater when it was incorporated as a city in 1922. The house was saved for its history and in honor of the contributions the Bloss family made to the community.

Merced, California, some people have no idea where this town is, but there is one couple that this town has kept together. While they were in high school at Merced High, he asked her out to go to the movies at the Mainplace Stadium Cinema. They officially became a couple after their first night out. Even though they lived in a small town, they found ways to have fun. They went to the Merced Mall, ate out at all the different restaurants or walk down Main Street. Their love was impeccable, until college applications were due. There were few colleges they both applied to because of their goals, but they came to a conclusion. He was going to California State University, Stanislaus and she was going to California State University, Fresno. They knew it would be hard to see each other, but they had Merced to keep them together because it was their midpoint. After college graduation, they were engaged to be married. A few months later, they both were in stable jobs and had set a date to be married. They were married in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. They still reside in Merced today with their children and grandchildren.

Merced, a town located in the Central California, is well-known as the “Gateway to Yosemite”. The population is made up of a diversity of ethnicities accompanied with the diverse and distinct cultures. Merced is a college town. Besides a community college, Merced College, which has an enrollment of more than 10,000 equivalent full time students, Merced is also a home of University of California, Merced (UCM), the tenth University of California campus, and the first research university built in the U.S. in the 21st century. Many people believe that Merced is an ideal environment for raising children because it has a favorable learning environment with a UC campus located right behind the backyard of the town, and a community college right at the town center. In my opinion, I think Merced is small, peaceful town to live. One benefit from living in a small town is that unlike other large cities, here in Merced, we don’t have to worry about traffic jam during rush hours.
