TheEffectingEye  > Photography > Visual Essay 3: Seduction Merced (Spring '09)
Merced and the San Joaquin Valley region have not received much positive press and the recent headline-making high rates of home foreclosure and unemployment have worsened the public perception (justified or misguided) of this area.

For this assignment, students act as important members of a mock non-profit organization in charge of promoting Merced to the national audience. They are given the task of designing a poster, with one to two images and a paragraph of 200 words, to show the "seductive" side(s) of Merced. They have the freedom to choose any subject matter (with or without people) and use any visual style that they deem appropriate to produce an effective poster.

There is no specified target audience, either. That is: the poster can appeal to the general public, families, business owners, developers, professionals, or young people like them.

They have the following options:
1) Simply submit 1-2 images and a text passage, or
2) Design an actual poster, with the image(s) and text incorporated, and submit a PDF of the poster (this option will be considered for a higher grade).

Merced and the San Joaquin Valley Region have received much negative press especially after the recent headline-making high rates of home foreclosure and unemployment. The general public including many San Joaquin residents have lost faith on the San Joaquin Valley Region. Many residents with home foreclosure issues have abandoned their house and left the Valley. Meanwhile, more and more residents lose their jobs and depend on unemployment benefits to provide minimum survival needs to their family. San Joaquin Valley Region is facing a horrible challenge since year 2007. Now, the economy within the Valley has reached the bottom.
However, we should not feel hopeless. The Valley is like the small plant that will grow up and become a big brush. With the help from the Stimulus Package and the establishment of UCM, the Valley’s economy will get better and we can make it through the rain. We, the Valley residents, should not lose faith on our hometown. At this very moment, we should stay together and deal with the challenge. Our hometown is the small plant that needs nutrition and protections from us in order to grow. It is asking for help and we should give it a hand. Let us help this plant grow step by step.

The San Joaquin Valley, a life of beautiful nature and hard -working communities. A place where no matter wherever you travel throughout the region, it always feels like home. It is soothing, full of light, and a great place to raise educated and determined families. We recently incorporated a new University of California, Merced. Now your children can seek that higher education they have always wanted and stay close to home. The diversity on this campus is incredible and a perfect place for your children to learn about other cultures and meet new people. Furthermore, the University is surrounded with beautiful land full of life’s nature and endless growing opportunities for a student like yourself. Merced is prideful when it comes to showing how our community is important and being united. Being able to be surrounded by nature’s beauty is so refreshing and is an escape from our daily stress in the city. The bright flowers and grass are a joy to be a part of and a great experience for those out-of-towners. The San Joaquin Valley is the only place where there is a Garden of the Sun that display’s flowers that are very rare. Now in display are the nation’s brightest flowers and vegetables. So come enjoy this experience it is the great vacation get away!

Tired and looking for a place to relax, anyone can enjoy these spectacular sites with just a quick breeze through the parks and trials that cuts throughout of Merced. If you’re a bird fan, then Lake Yosemite is the perfect spot to be at. In the spring, you can enjoy the view of migrating and nesting birds that sweeps through the skies and listen to their calls. If you are simply tired from the stressful life of being typical college students, then you can also mediate and enjoy the view of the peacefulness the lake has to offer. With clouds nowhere else to be found, one can just enjoy the weather here during the spring. Escaping from the day and slipping into the night, one can enjoy the beauty of downtown Merced. Not only is this the place to take a date out, but just to hang out with friends.

This country is one that waits for things to happen. It is a reactive society instead of a proactive one. The city of Merced I feel is one that is different from the norm. The city may not be as plentiful and abundant as New York, but the personal connection is something powerful.

I go to UC Merced and I realized that they tore down a golf course to put up a University; a place of higher learning. Nature still fills the campus and the city in general so my picture explains the relationship that these two have. There was a war between preserving nature and constructing intelligence in the end it was a draw.

Now, every day I wake up and head to campus I am so thankful that I am able to experience the beauty of intelligence in a very unique place. The city of Merced has continued to strive with social events and strong political movements this city shows that nature definitely constructs intelligence.

University of California, Merced, right on the out skirts of the the city Merced, how can one say this does not look like a beautiful place? Not only is the city of Merced nestled right in the Central Valley, home of the vast fields of agriculture, it is right near the gateway to the world famous Yosemite National Park. This picture is a view of one of the many high lights the city of Merced has to offer. Merced has a new thriving world class University, home to young intelligent minds who are working hard to make their lives around them better. The city of Merced has an amazing future coming soon and they would love for you to be apart of it. Not only is this University the only thing being built, there are many new neighborhoods going up at an incredible rate. Back when the United States was just getting started, many people traveled from other parts of the world to the United states for a fresh start and for opportunity. The University is providing the city of Merced with a fresh start at an amazing chance at opportunity that is not possible in any other city.

It's a small town really. It's not the smallest town, but definitely a small town with a population under one hundred thousand. It's history though, could be as old as when white man discovered gold in California. If you drive up from southern California to northern California; from hundreds of miles a way as you driving, you might see street signs for Merced River, Merced, Avenue and etc? then you have to still drive up another two hundred miles north of central valley till you get to the actual Merced County! Today this historic city that once was one of the main important cities for gold diggers has turned into an almost forgotten city. In December 2005, one of the biggest universities instates in united nation established it?s tenth and newest campuses in this city. It is known as University of California, Merced. Due to down turns of economy, this city is losing its values. Houses are for foreclosures. People are losing interest in buying properties and investing their money in this beautiful but forgotten town. Here I have captured two pictures that I believe they stand up to the name of Merced. If Eiffel tower makes the Parisian proud so does the beautiful and historical buildings located in the heart of this town, in the downtown area. The subjects of these pictures are the famous Merced tower and a self-explanatory view of a park and a restaurant. They display history, warmth, passion and beauty.
